Where River Meets the Sky: Inside Our 8-Day Himalayan Journey from Chandigarh to Doksa

Himalayan wellness journey is more than travelling from one destination to another. It is about slowing down, changing perspective, and allowing the landscape around you to become part of the experience. Our 8-day journey from Chandigarh to Doksa takes you through winding mountain roads, river valleys, ancient villages, dramatic landscapes, and finally into the quiet surroundings of Spiti Valley.

With every turn, the familiar disappears and something new begins to emerge. The journey gradually moves you away from the pace of everyday life and toward a simpler rhythm shaped by nature, community, and stillness.

At Anam Cara Retreats, we believe that transformation can begin long before you arrive at a retreat. The journey itself can become an invitation to pause, observe, breathe, and reconnect.

Our 8-Day Himalayan Journey

An 8-day journey from Chandigarh to Thanedar, Kalpa, Mane, Doksa, Tabo and Rampur, combining mountain landscapes, local experiences, wellness, nature and meaningful connection.

Day 1: Chandigarh — Arrival

Every Himalayan journey begins with a departure.

The journey begins in Chandigarh, where participants arrive and come together before heading into the mountains. This first day offers time to settle in, meet fellow travellers, and prepare for the adventure ahead.

From here, the familiar landscape of the city gradually gives way to the mountains.

Day 2: Chandigarh → Thanedar

The journey begins in earnest as we travel from Chandigarh to Thanedar.

Along the way, you’ll encounter beautiful apple orchards and changing mountain landscapes. The day also creates space for storytelling and an opening circle, giving everyone an opportunity to connect and begin the journey together.

It’s the first real step away from the pace of everyday life and into the slower rhythm of the Himalayas.

Day 3: Thanedar → Kalpa

From Thanedar, the journey continues towards Kalpa.

This stage brings us closer to the spiritual and cultural character of the region, with chanting at temples and monasteries and spectacular views of Kinnaur Kailash.

The experience isn’t simply about reaching the next destination. The mountains, monasteries and local traditions invite moments of reflection and presence.

Day 4: Kalpa → Mane / Doksa

The road takes us deeper into the Himalayas as we travel from Kalpa towards Mane and Doksa.

It’s a long drive, but the changing landscape becomes part of the experience. As the day comes to an end, we’ll take in the sunset, gather around a bonfire, and hear stories of snow leopard expeditions.

It’s an evening for warmth, storytelling and connection beneath the Himalayan sky.

Day 5: At Doksa — The Riverbed

Arriving at Doksa marks an important transition in the journey.

Day 5 takes place around the riverbed, bringing together the natural surroundings with a range of experiences including yoga, a river picnic and live music.

As evening arrives, the experience continues with “Lotus Rising” stories of Padmasambhava, creating space for reflection, storytelling and cultural connection.

Day 6: At Doksa — Sopona Lake

Day 6 takes us further into the surrounding landscape with a journey towards Sopona Lake.

The day includes hiking trails, glacier lakes and visits to local villages, offering an opportunity to experience the extraordinary landscape and communities of the region.

As night falls, the experience becomes quieter with a sound bath under the stars.

Surrounded by the vast Himalayan sky, this is an opportunity to slow down, listen, breathe and simply be present.

Day 7: Mane → Tabo → Rampur

The journey home begins on Day 7, but there is still much to experience.

We travel from Mane to Tabo and then towards Rampur, visiting ancient monasteries along the way.

The morning begins with Tabo morning chants, offering a peaceful transition from the retreat experience back into the journey home.

As the road continues, the high Himalayan landscape gradually begins to disappear behind us.

Day 8: Rampur → Chandigarh

The final day takes us from Rampur back to Chandigarh.

After eight days of mountains, rivers, monasteries, villages, shared experiences, yoga, music, reflection and adventure, the journey comes to an end.

But returning home doesn’t mean the experience has to end.

The memories, practices, conversations and moments of stillness can continue to influence everyday life long after the mountains are behind you.

Why the Journey Matters as Much as the Destination

Modern travel often focuses on reaching a destination as quickly as possible. But travelling through the Himalayas offers a different perspective.

The road becomes part of the experience.

From the apple orchards of Thanedar and the views of Kinnaur Kailash to the monasteries of Tabo, the riverbed at Doksa, Sopona Lake and evenings beneath the stars, every stage introduces a different side of the Himalayas.

This is what makes the Chandigarh-to-Doksa journey special. It isn’t simply transportation to a retreat it is the first chapter of the retreat experience.
